It's DiscordOver 2.0 - 22/09/2026 Blog Entry - Venus Territory

In case you need even more reasons to leave that putrid platform, check these:

After an agonizing wait, we got an update from Discord on regards to Age Verification Assurance. Please read it before continuing. My TLDR is that you shouldn't give Discord any verification data under any context. Also, cancel your Nitro. Tomorrow we will see how the rollout looks like.

Before I comment on the news, I still recommend that you switch over to an alternative platform like Matrix. The update released by Discord is not great. I advice you utilize the Sable interface for Matrix and that you sign up your account in either a server you own or in the Unredacted.org account provider. If you want to read more about Matrix, check out The Matrix has you... - 14/02/2026 Blog Entry. If you are looking for a place to try out Matrix, you can hop in my space, Starlight Fruit Café.
Matrix is especially useful if you need a safe encrypted communication channel, even if you plan on continuing using Discord, you should move sensitive communications over to a platform with end-to-end-encryption. Talking about any topic that can get people jailed is worth talking in a safe channel, more in surveillance state countries.

Going back to Discord, the future of their platform depends on how good their age calculating algorithm is, because they promise that 90% of users won't see any age verification checks. If too many people are wrongfully placed on the wrong age bracket, there will be too many cracks in the dam.

Even if on paper their intentions are good, the implementation is problematic. Discord's plan is making it feel safe and comfortable to give them your data. They added more ways you can supply them with your identity and they use a lot of language to make you feel safe about this, constantly promising they respect your privacy.

But when we look closer, we can find out that this is all a lie.
First, the seemingly sole provider for Age Verification is k-ID. They handle all the methods Discord uses to verify your information. Placing all the responsibility on a single company is a risky move, you only have to hack one guy to get every Discord user's information. Furthermore, according to their terms of service:

C. Disclosure in the Event of Merger, Sale, or Other Asset Transfers
If we are involved in an actual or proposed merger, acquisition, financing due diligence, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, purchase or sale of assets, or transition of service to another provider, your information may be sold or transferred in connection with such a transaction, solely as permitted by law.

Data is the digital world's currency. All it takes is k-ID getting sold or going bankrupt to make it possible to change the terms of how the data is handled. We should asume that this will happen on the future, as k-ID and Discord share Andreessen Horowitz as a common investor. Even if things go well for them, all it takes is hacking one company to get everything...

Another problematic aspect is that Discord is rolling Age Verification globally. They are capable of limiting its expansion to states that require said checks, like Brazil, yet they decided to roll this out globally. Why should anyone in a freedom respecting country bend the knee to what Discord and a few bitchy states think is the best way to handle Age Verification?

In case you still think I am crazy, I should remind you that Discord already suffered a data breach last year, that compromised around 70,000 government IDs of UK citizens. Breaches are more common than ever and even if you trust Discord are acting correctly, you can still get harmed.

I voiced my concerns innumerable times, just look at some of my past blogs. What I can guarantee is that things will get worse on Discord as states get more authoritative and hackers more skilled and that Matrix won't go down without giving a fight for our freedoms.

Are you sure you want to gamble your data over in the age of AI cybersecurity? Think about it, I am just acting as the emissary of this information, your free will is yours to enjoy.

We might be even entering an age where communication services free from Big Tech's paws, be it forums, image boards or alternative chat platforms like Matrix get sized by authorities for disagreeing with Age Verification laws. We reap what we sow.

What will your choice be?
