Welcome to the Dream Lands - 08/11/2025 Blog Entry

Lately, I have been inhabiting the dream realms. A few kind souls have been hard at work in making these worlds exciting once again, they also removed a ton of nightmares from these realms. This blog exists to spread the word of the nice things inside the Dream Lands.

Yume Nikki Online Project & Collective Unconscious

If you ever wanted to play Yume Nikki, there is no need to slug around with the lackluster steam release or visiting image boards (how scary!), all you need is to enter Yume Nikki Online Project's website and start playing. Just select the Yume Nikki door and jump into the Dream Lands!
This project also adds multiplayer and mobile controls, everyone can play.

YNO seems to be spearheading the development of one particular game, Collective Unconscious. I tried it out these days and it was pretty fun! It was impressive seeing how far these people pushed the humble RPG Maker 2003 engine. 2D Yume Nikki seems to be in a good spot these days, try it out, the games are free and they run practically everywhere!
But... Why did I say 2D Yume Nikki?

This looks familiar...
Yume Nikki Playstation 1

So many polygons!

Yes, you heard that right. Elias Daler made a demo port of Yume Nikki in 3D for the Playstation 1! Go play it now!
This little game deserves a review, but please go play it before reading more as this is a short experience:

First, Yume Nikki is terrifying now. The game no longer looks silly, the atmosphere engulfs you. Madotsuki's room feels claustrophobic, you can't exit and the balcony feels even more hostile. This feeling gets more extenuating if you use the first person view, like in here:

Can't leave
Just like in Monsters Inc.

Thankfully, not every area is this creepy and the effect gets toned down when you have Madotsuki in view. The block world is by far the least creepy area.

Minecraft!
Hello!

This port includes some quality of life features, like giving Madotsuki the ability to run and jump. The block world turns into a parkour map and like you saw, you can climb onto furniture. There is also the handy camera mode, that lets you take amazing pictures.

Cheese!
Cheese!

Another strong point is that orientating yourself becomes much harder, I lost myself in the snow world for a long time, adding up to the immersion of being inside the Dream Lands.
Seeing the Yuki-onna appear in the fog was scary.

Always watching...
Behind You...

This game was very fun to play. Aside a few occasional minor bugs and the lackluster performance of block world (if you overclock the emulator you can fix it), this was fantastic.
It made me appreciate Yume Nikki as a game and Kikiyama's vision more. What are you waiting for? The Dream Lands are waiting for you and there might be some surprises hidden deep inside...

Secret?
